SISAC 2nd Place

We beat QSI 1-0 and lost 2-1 to SWIS to claim Silver at the SISAC finals. 5 wins out of 6 in the league stages, and we dreamt of winning the title after improving our form after the 3-4 loss to SWIS on day one. I guess they are still the better team though. Ils sont les meilleurs; they deserve it more than we do. Plus, we lost two players, including our starting GK. Really appreciate the rest of the lads and the gaffer - great team performances.

Visit to SUSTech and Some More COVID Evidence

Today the school sponsored a trip to the Southern University of Science and Technology to visit the school's cryo-EM lab. It was a good trip and we got to see a lot of the stuff that they had in the lab...although the younger kids were more interested in the smart glass window. Having worked with microscopes I was also excited to see some more advanced apparatus. They had a bunch of their published research up on the board...one paper interested me: "The Architecture of Inactivated SARS-CoV-2 with Postfusion Spikes Revealed by Cryo-EM and Cryo-ET" by C. Liu et al. (Link here, open access: https://www.cell.com/structure/fulltext/S0969-2126(20)30372-5 ) While I was not extremely concerned with the imaging of the virus (which was the real highlight of the paper), one diagram in the "Isolation and Identification" section was interesting: The caption was, "Viral RNAs were extracted from the cell culture supernatant and detected using a commercial kit probing

ISL Champions!

Champions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🌀 After a very high pressure semifinal home against Harrow (which we won 8-3, despite conceding first), we were in the final against Merchiston (and fortunately, this time with the whole squad to work with), and although we were tied 0-0 at HT that second half performance gave us a 7-0 win to remember. Our goalkeeper also somehow kept a clean sheet after deciding to play CDM for half of the half. TBH Merchiston defended really well while playing Conteball in the first half, and we were playing some combination of possession and laid-back football. There should've been a clear penalty when our striker was punched in the face in an aerial battle...but we have nobody at Stockley Park to save us. Then we realized that us on the ball was better than Merchiston off of it so we went all out Pep Guardiola and had some fun...the rest is history.
